The co-leader of the Green Party parliamentary group, Katharina Dröge, has indicated that a future return to national politics for Robert Habeck remains a possibility. Addressing questions about whether his recent decision to step down from a leading role within the party definitively closed the door to him holding a top governmental position, Dröge stated that while the Greens would have welcomed his continued involvement, his decision is respected and the party remains open to his future contributions.
Dröge also defended Habeck’s strongly worded criticisms of several prominent political figures in his farewell interview, including Bundestag President Julia Klöckner (CDU). She argued that the role of Bundestag President fundamentally requires a unifying approach and characterized Klöckner’s engagement in political debate as partisan and divisive. She specifically cited Klöckner’s comparison of the “taz” newspaper with the online portal Nius as a misstep, suggesting that previous holders of the office – Norbert Lammert, Wolfgang Schäuble and Matthias Bas – would not have behaved in a similar manner.
Dröge affirmed her support for Habeck’s critique, asserting that a legitimate discussion is underway regarding whether Klöckner is adequately fulfilling the requirements of her position and expressing her personal view that, currently, she is not.
