Dröge and Haßelmann Set to Dominate the Party's New Era?

Berlin, Germany – The German Greens are set to hold internal elections for their top leadership positions, with the Bundestagsfraktion scheduled to vote on Monday. According to the “Handelsblatt” newspaper, citing parliamentary sources, Katharina Dröge and Britta Haßelmann are expected to be re-elected to their positions, with no known challengers.

Dröge and Haßelmann have led the Greens’ Bundestagsfraktion in the previous parliamentary term and have been acting in their roles since a few weeks ago. They are likely to form a significant part of the new power center of the Greens, following the departures of Robert Habeck and Annalena Baerbock.

Additionally, the first parliamentary business manager is set to be elected on Monday, with Irene Mihalic expected to be re-elected to her position, having also held it in the previous term.

Earlier, the election of the Greens’ candidate for the office of Bundestag Vice President was planned for Monday, but it is expected to feature multiple candidates. Three MPs have submitted their applications, with Katrin Göring-Eckardt seeking to retain her position, but facing competition from former party chief Omid Nouripour and outgoing Culture Minister Claudia Roth. However, it is also possible that a consensus is reached among the candidates beforehand, resulting in only one or two candidates on the ballot for Monday’s vote.
