Dortmund Chief Lunow Steps Down Paving Way For Watzke

Borussia Dortmund’s president, Reinhold Lunow, has announced his intention to step down from his position in November, the club confirmed Friday. This decision clears the path for Hans-Joachim Watzke to pursue the presidency, a role for which he has previously expressed interest.

Lunow stated he had initially planned to seek re-election to ensure the continued development of Borussia Dortmund in line with the wishes of its members. However, discussions with Watzke led to assurances that key priorities would be addressed should he be elected. Feeling confident his concerns will be taken into account, Lunow believes he can confidently relinquish his duties.

Watzke, aged 66, had previously declared his intention to contend for the presidency following his departure as the club’s chief executive. Lunow, who has held the presidential role since November 2022, initially surprised observers by announcing a potential bid for re-election, suggesting a possible contest between the two figures. Lunow’s withdrawal now removes that prospect.
