Doctors Urge Mandatory Heat Protection Plans

Facing a period of intense heat, the Federal Medical Association is urging political leaders to develop legally binding strategies for heat protection.

President of the German Medical Association, Dr. Klaus Reinhardt, stated to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that Germany urgently requires concrete heat protection plans, clearly defined responsibilities and targeted support for particularly vulnerable populations. These groups include individuals with disabilities and chronic illnesses, the elderly, pregnant women, children and those lacking access to cooling spaces.

Dr. Reinhardt emphasized the readiness of medical professionals to contribute but stressed the need for a broader, collaborative approach. He asserted that heat protection measures should extend beyond healthcare settings to encompass cities, schools, businesses, care facilities and individual homes. The association believes a comprehensive strategy is crucial to mitigate the health risks associated with rising temperatures.
