Dobrindt to Push Stricter EU Migration Policy

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) is advocating for a stricter migration policy across Europe. He plans to discuss specific measures with several counterparts from other EU nations. The meeting, dubbed the “Zugspitz Summit on Migration” is scheduled to take place in two weeks on the Zugspitze mountain, according to reports from the Interior Ministry cited by Handelsblatt.

The central focus of the summit will be the “reorganization of European migration policy”. The stated aim is to generate significant impetus for a more robust European approach to migration and to establish an agenda for accelerating migration processes within the EU. Dobrindt has invited the interior ministers of neighboring countries France, Poland, Austria, Denmark and the Czech Republic, as well as EU Interior Commissioner Ylva Johansson.

According to the Interior Ministry, the summit is expected to result in the adoption of a “Zugspitz Declaration” outlining concrete points for action. These points are intended to be actively pursued by the participating interior ministers in the coming weeks and months at the European level. The proposed measures include innovative solutions with third countries, a determined crackdown on human trafficking, consistent deportations and strengthened EU external borders, the Interior Ministry stated.
