Dobrindt Introduces Controversial Border Refusals for Asylum Seekers

Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) has announced stricter border controls. As of now, there will be returns of asylum seekers at the borders, he said on Wednesday afternoon in Berlin. A directive from 2015 that provided for the opposite has been revoked, he added. Illegal migration must be further pushed back, said the CSU politician, speaking of a matter of “clarity, consistency and control.” To this end, more federal police officers will also be deployed at the border. The return of asylum seekers at the border has been controversial for some time. According to the coalition agreement, this should take place in consultation with neighboring countries, but opposition politicians see Dobrindt’s plans as an attempt to surprise these countries and generally as a violation of the right to asylum.
