Germany’s Transport Minister, Volker Wissing, is pushing forward with a digital vehicle registration certificate. “Important vehicle documents should be easily accessible and shareable on a smartphone, so the paper vehicle registration can stay at home in the future” Wissing told the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung (Saturday edition).
The Ministry of Transport, in collaboration with the Federal Motor Transport Authority and the Federal Printing Office, has developed an app for this purpose. The pilot phase is set to begin shortly, with an internal testing phase followed by an open testing phase for interested citizens, Wissing announced, adding that the app would be available for testing from early April.
The experiences and feedback gathered during the testing phase will directly influence the app’s further development. A call with more information will be issued shortly before the start of the external testing phase, Wissing said. The ministry has created the legal prerequisites for the digital vehicle registration to be used in everyday life and recognized by authorities during checks, even during the pilot phase.
The digital vehicle registration is the next step in the transition to internet-based services in the automotive sector, following the successful online vehicle registration, which has been used over two million times to date.
