Did Merz Just Give Away the Game?

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has declined to comment on the criticism he faced for his statement that Israel’s actions in Iran would “take care of the dirty work” for Germany.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Merz claimed that his statement had received “overwhelming approval” and that he was pleased that many others shared his view. He also stated that he would not comment on the few critical voices that had been raised.

Criticism of Merz’s statement came from SPD Member of Parliament Ralf Stegner, who described the language used as “disturbing” and implying that Merz believed the actions in Iran were a violation of international law. Stegner expressed his concern that the escalation of the situation should not be met with public relief, but rather with a focus on finding a peaceful resolution.

Stegner’s concerns were not an isolated view, as he claimed that the majority of the SPD shared his unease with Merz’s statement. He also emphasized the need to avoid public expressions of relief when international law is being violated and instead work towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

The German Chancellor’s statement had sparked widespread criticism, with Stegner stating that he knew of no one who did not find the language used “disturbing”. He also expressed his fear that the military conflict would lead to further human suffering and political instability in the region.

According to Iranian reports, over 200 people have lost their lives in the Israeli attacks, with over 1,200 more injured, the majority of whom are civilians.
