After the strong earthquake in Tibet, the death toll continues to rise. According to the official Chinese news agency Xinhua, 95 deaths and 130 injuries have been officially confirmed as of Tuesday.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered comprehensive rescue measures, it was reported. However, the rescue efforts may prove challenging in the remote and often hard-to-reach valleys of the Himalayas. The affected area lies in a high plateau. Both power and water supplies in the region have been disrupted.
The earthquake occurred in the morning (local time) on Tuesday near the Chinese border with Nepal. Geologists gave a magnitude of between 6.8 and 7.1. It is believed that the tremors were also felt in Nepal and parts of India. There are about 18 earthquakes of this magnitude worldwide per year, often resulting in significant damage to buildings.
