Aiwanger States Agreement on Debt Package to Prevent SPD Involvement in Bavarian Government
The head of the Free Voters, Hubert Aiwanger, has stated that he agreed to the debt package to prevent the Social Democratic Party (SPD) from participating in the government of Bavaria. In an interview with the “Augsburger Allgemeine”, he said, “If we had been dismissed or had resigned, the CSU could have agreed without us.”
It was not even necessary for the SPD to be involved, according to Bavarian Minister of Economics. The SPD would only have been needed for a new coalition, he said. Prior to the agreement on Monday, the stance of the Free Voters was that the presented package was not coherent and could not be agreed upon at the time. The party leader expressed the hope of being able to change something at that point.
Aiwanger accused CDU leader Friedrich Merz of having had the numbers prepared in advance, saying, “I believe that the things prepared by Merz were not first worked out after the election, but rather beforehand. If he agreed on such numbers within a few days, in my opinion, that was pre-prepared.”
Regarding the consequences for Bavaria, Aiwanger stated, “I fear that the economy will continue to struggle, despite the financial possibilities, because the pressure to reform will be paid for by the Union if it fails to bring the SPD onto a reasonable course.” Therefore, Bavaria will also have a “massive need for consolidation.” “Harder years are coming for Bavaria”, the minister said.
