Czech Republic Urges Temporary Border Checks

Czech President Petr Pavel has cautioned against the permanence of enhanced border controls, referencing recent measures implemented by Germany. He emphasized the significance of free movement of people and goods as “one of Europe’s greatest achievements” in an interview with “Welt”. Pavel warned that unilateral departures from the Schengen system would be detrimental to the entire European Union, stressing that any measures taken to secure borders between Schengen states should be temporary and aimed at addressing specific crisis situations.

The increased border checks conducted by Germany, including those at the Czech border, which commenced after the formation of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s government in May, have prompted Pavel’s remarks. He advocated for greater coordination amongst EU member states regarding border security and articulated a broader call for a stricter approach to migration policy.

Beyond enhanced border controls, Pavel underscored the importance of bolstering the EU’s external borders and improving information sharing between border authorities. He further expressed a desire for a firmer stance on irregular migration, suggesting a reassessment of approaches towards individuals who abuse the hospitality extended to them by failing to adhere to the rules of the host country.
