The Minister-President of Saarland, Anke Rehlinger (SPD), has cautioned against protracted “culture wars” stating that such conflicts are characteristic of the AfD party. In an interview with “Welt am Sonntag” Rehlinger emphasized that the pressing issues facing her region extend far beyond debates surrounding symbolic language or social customs. She asserted that citizens primarily voice concerns about practical matters, not abstract cultural debates.
Regarding the ongoing discussions around a potential ban on the AfD party, Rehlinger stressed that such legal action should not substitute for genuine political engagement. She underscored the constitutional provision allowing for party bans in cases of direct opposition to the constitution, but noted that the focus should remain on addressing the views and concerns of the electorate, not disenfranchising them. Rehlinger expressed her commitment to engaging with all citizens, stating she has no intention of disregarding the perspectives of a significant portion of the electorate.
Minister-President Rehlinger also highlighted the need for adjustments within the social welfare system. She advocated for stricter consequences for those who abuse benefits, citing failures to adhere to agreements or attend scheduled appointments. Simultaneously, she emphasized the importance of a fair distribution of the additional financial burdens anticipated for the coming year. Rehlinger suggested that before considering drastic measures like dismantling social programs or reducing pensions, a deeper examination of potential contributions from those with significant wealth, including exploring options related to inheritance tax, should be undertaken. Any potential shift in policy on inheritance tax by the CDU and CSU parties, she suggested, would be a significant and potentially constructive area for coalition discussion.
