CSU Chief Seeks European Approval for Tightened German Border Policy Amidst Criticism

CSU leader Markus Söder expects stricter border controls and refusals at German borders, despite significant criticism, to gain support in Europe. “I am convinced that the European neighbors will eventually accept it” said Söder to “Bild am Sonntag”. “Germany has had a special situation because we have taken in many migrants, although we do not have to do so according to European legal systems. There has been a European disorder regarding migration for many years.” He understands that “initial skepticism may exist among some European partners. We will quickly continue to discuss the details with the Federal Republic and our partners.”

Söder also announced further measures against “illegal immigration and migration”: “This is a strong start, but more is coming. In addition to changing the citizenship law, flights from Afghanistan will be stopped. Expulsions will be intensified through expelling and expanding safe third countries.”

These measures will “lead to hesitation in making the long journey to Germany. It will also give motivation to leave Germany again because there is less to expect here.
