County Leaders Reject Election Merger Proposal

The proposal to synchronize all state parliament elections across Germany on a single day has been rejected by Achim Brötel, head of the German Association of District Administrators (Deutscher Landkreistag). Brötel, a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), voiced his opposition to the suggestion put forward by Bundestag Vice President Omid Nouripour of the Green Party, stating that such a move would be both incorrect and potentially dangerous.

While acknowledging that many elections are already strategically combined where feasible, Brötel cautioned against implementing a nationwide, simultaneous system. He highlighted concerns regarding the stability of the democratic legal system, arguing that holding all state elections on one day could create vulnerabilities, particularly if a significant incident were to occur shortly beforehand. He cited the recent attack in Aschaffenburg as an example of how such an event could impact the overall results of the elections nationwide.

Conversely, Brötel emphasized the stabilizing effect of staggered elections, noting that the possibility of governments failing and triggering early elections requires flexibility within the electoral calendar. He concluded that altering this established system would be detrimental and urged against making changes.
