Energie Cottbus, a third-tier club, secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Hannover 96 in the first round of the DFB-Pokal (German Cup) at home. The Cottbus team, managed by Pele Wollitz, demonstrated strong commitment from the outset and were rewarded with an early lead. In the 12th minute, Engelhardt, while falling, provided an assist to Cigerci, who powerfully struck the ball from a tight angle, sending it into the net after it hit the underside of the crossbar.
The visiting Hannover side struggled to generate attacking ideas throughout much of the match. They were presented with a significant opportunity to equalize in the 42nd minute when a foul by Pelivan on Pichler resulted in a penalty. However, Cottbus goalkeeper Sebald successfully saved Tomiak’s shot and Guwara subsequently cleared the rebound. The home side entered halftime with a deserved lead.
Following the break, Hannover took until the 63rd minute to create their next clear chance, but Sebald proved equal to Nkili’s powerful attempt, diverting the ball around the post. In the 73rd minute, Oudenne fired from distance, but Guwara made a crucial goal-line clearance.
Hannover continued to press for an equalizer, but their efforts proved unsuccessful.
In other first-round DFB-Pokal matches, SC Freiburg defeated Sportfreunde Lotte 2-0, while Darmstadt 98 overcame VfB Lübeck with a 2-1 result.
