Conservatives, Social Democrats and Liberals Unite in Historic Coalition

Austria is set to form a government comprising the ÖVP, SPÖ and Neos, with the coalition’s program to be officially presented on Thursday, according to sources on Wednesday.

A similar alliance was attempted after the National Council election on September 29, but initially failed. The ÖVP subsequently negotiated with the right-conservative FPÖ, which emerged as the strongest force in the election, but is largely isolated and unable to form a majority on its own.

According to media reports, the “Ampel” coalition, as the new three-party alliance is referred to in Austria, is planning asylum restrictions, including the possible suspension of family reunification and the establishment of “return centers” for rejected asylum seekers. Smartphones are expected to be banned in schools and the offer of full-day schools is to be expanded.
