Commissioner Takes Over Victim Care in Shocking Machete Attack

A German federal ombudsman for victims and a Berlin state ombudsman for victims, Roland Weber, will take over the care of those affected by the knife attack at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin from last Friday, the Federal Ministry of Justice announced on Tuesday. The General Public Prosecutor’s Office had already taken over the investigation into the attack, which is believed to have been motivated by Islamic extremism.

During the attack, in which a Spanish tourist was seriously injured with a knife, several witnesses were also present and had to be treated by rescue workers on the scene. The ombudsman for victims is also responsible for their care. From Tuesday, a psychosocial counseling hotline will also be available to the affected parties.

“The brutal knife attack at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin on Friday was a deeply inhumane and shocking act” Weber said. “I am very relieved that it was possible to save the life of the person attacked. I wish the injured person from the bottom of my heart a quick and complete recovery.
