German Police Chief Urges Clarification on Border Rejections

The German Federal Police Chief, Uli Grötsch, has called for greater legal certainty for the officers deployed at border control stations. In an interview with the Rheinische Post, Grötsch emphasized that the personnel in charge of border rejections cannot be held accountable.

Grötsch, a member of the Social Democratic Party, stressed that it is the responsibility of the employer, in this case the Federal Ministry of the Interior, to ensure a clear legal framework for border rejections, in addition to providing clear instructions. The police chief also referred to a recent verdict by the Berlin Administrative Court, stating that, as a non-lawyer, he sees a discrepancy between the executive and judicial branches, which he considers a problematic situation that requires prompt clarification.

Grötsch urged that the officers, who have a right to work in accordance with the law, must be able to act in a lawful manner. He insisted that this issue should be addressed by the Ministry of the Interior.
