Consumer Prices for Coffee Rise Sharply in Germany
According to the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the prices of roasted coffee in Germany have increased by 12.2% in April 2025 compared to the same period the previous year. This is a significant rise, especially considering the overall inflation rate of 2.1% and the 2.8% increase in food prices during the same period.
The sharp increase in coffee prices is largely attributed to the rising import prices of raw coffee beans, which have been affected by factors such as extreme weather conditions leading to crop failures. In April 2025, the import prices of non-roasted coffee beans were 53.1% higher than a year earlier, with the import of raw coffee from the Americas increasing by 61.8%, Asia and other regions by 43.8% and Africa by 23.2%.
The import prices of coffee, whether decaffeinated or roasted, rose by 35.8% in April 2025 compared to the same period the previous year. In the long term, the import prices of non-roasted coffee beans in April 2025 were 147.4% higher than in April 2021, with coffee, whether decaffeinated or roasted, experiencing a price increase of more than two-thirds (67.3%).
Industrial producers in Germany have also seen a significant rise in the prices of roasted coffee, with the prices of non-decaffeinated and decaffeinated roasted coffee increasing by 43.3% and 45.2% respectively in April 2025 compared to the same period the previous year. In the long term, the producer prices of non-decaffeinated roasted coffee in April 2025 were 86.1% higher than in April 2021 and those of decaffeinated roasted coffee were 78.7% higher.
Germany’s coffee imports, including both raw and roasted coffee, increased by 14.1% in 2024 to 1.25 million tons, up from 1.09 million tons in the previous year. Over the long term, the coffee import volume in 2024 was 7.9% higher than in 2015, with 41.4% of the imported coffee coming from Brazil, 16.2% from Vietnam, 5.5% from Honduras and 4.3% from Colombia. Other significant trading partners for Germany’s coffee imports included Uganda, Italy and Peru, each accounting for around 4% of the total import volume.
