Coalition in Crisis Major Showdown Looms

The recent failed election for judges of the Federal Constitutional Court has triggered a demand for an extraordinary session of the German Bundestag. Green Party parliamentary group leaders Britta Haßelmann and Katharina Dröge articulated the urgency of the situation on Friday, emphasizing the need to ascertain the continued stability of the governing coalition.

“Jens Spahn and Friedrich Merz must demonstrate that this coalition retains the necessary majority within the German Bundestag” they stated. The leaders expressed concern regarding a prolonged period of uncertainty, particularly during the summer months.

The failed election has placed considerable strain on the coalition government. The Green Party parliamentary group is advocating for a special session to be held next week, specifically to address the election of the Federal Constitutional Court judges. They cite respect for the three candidates and the institution of the Constitutional Court as key motivations.

“The Committee for the Election of Judges selected three highly qualified and suitable individuals with a two-thirds majority” the parliamentary group leaders affirmed. They indicated their firm support for all three candidates. The Green Party representatives further expect the CDU/CSU and SPD to secure the necessary democratic majority for their respective nominees within the Bundestag, emphasizing the importance of demonstrating governmental stability and functionality.
