Climate Marches to Go On, Despite Munich Auto Attack

The planned climate protests for Friday are set to take place in over 150 locations, despite the suspected attack in Munich. This was stated by Carla Reemtsma, the spokesperson for Fridays for Future, in an interview with the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland on Thursday.

In Munich itself, there will only be a rally instead of the planned run demonstration, due to the constraints on the police force caused by the Munich Security Conference, Reemtsma explained.

“We are now in contact again with the authorities and the police to ensure the safe conduct of the demonstrations and there may be adjustments to the arrangements or security measures on the spot” Reemtsma said. “We are always in contact with the authorities weeks in advance to ensure the safety of our protests” the Fridays-for-Future spokesperson added.

The chairman of the Police Union (GdP), Jochen Kopelke, announced that the police will ensure the safety of the demonstrations and will increase their measures for that purpose. “There will be more visible police and security measures – we want people to be able to show the strength of our society tomorrow” Kopelke told the RND.

“We, the police, must be able to give the best possible protection to the people in our country, so that everyone in Germany can be sure of their fundamental rights” he emphasized. He also lamented that the German Bundestag has not passed any security laws, calling it “absolutely bitter for us in the security authorities”.
