Climate Emergency: Merkel's Last Warning: 'Europe's Future at Stake'!

European Climate Goals and Carbon Emissions Trading Scheme to Remain in Place, Says Merkel

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has expressed her support for maintaining the European climate goals and the expansion of the carbon emissions trading scheme, set to begin in 2027. In an interview with the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung, Merkel emphasized the importance of a social compensation mechanism, such as the climate dividend, to offset the increased costs of fossil fuels for consumers. She noted that no one has yet managed to implement a reasonable social compensation mechanism, which is crucial for public acceptance.

Merkel reiterated her commitment to upholding the European climate goals, stating that she believes it is essential to stay on track with the plans to achieve a climate-neutral Europe by 2050. She emphasized the significance of the emissions trading scheme, as it allows for the creative potential of individuals, inventors and developers to flourish.

The Chancellor also addressed the potential increase in fuel and heating costs for consumers, beginning in 2027, saying that the price signal is superior to an ordinance-based signal. She believes that, with the right decisions, consumers can still heat and fuel their vehicles in a cost-effective manner. Merkel personally believes that the price signal is more effective and emphasized that, without a concerted effort, Europe will not achieve climate neutrality. She suggested that, if the goal is not to be achieved, it should be openly stated.
