Church Blasts Plan to Suspend Reunification of Refugees

A leading Christian denomination in Germany has voiced strong opposition to the planned suspension of family reunification in the country.

The Evangelical Church in Berlin, Brandenburg and the Upper Lusatia region has emphasized the importance of family unity, stating that parents and children belong together, as do siblings and families as a whole. According to Bishop Christian Stäblein, this is a fundamental principle of neighborly love, particularly for refugees and those in need of subsidiary protection, who should not be separated from their closest relatives for years.

Stäblein, who is also the EKD’s designated representative for refugee issues, expressed hope that lawmakers would recognize the need for more comprehensive regulations on family reunification. He believes that the connection and cohesion of family are crucial for a successful integration, as individuals who can live with their loved ones in safety are more likely to find a sense of belonging, learn the local language and become a part of the community. The church official emphasized the importance of generous rules on family reunification for a society that wishes to remain human and recall Christian values.
