Christoph Hein: Goodbye GDR, Hello Present Time

German writer Christoph Hein plans to stop writing about the DDR. In an interview with the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland”, Hein explained that the history of the SED state is over and he wants to move on. His latest work, “Das Narrenschiff”, has been on the “Spiegel”-bestseller list for several weeks and will be his last work about the DDR. Hein, who was born in 1944 in Silesia and grew up in Bad Düben in Saxony, has written extensively about life in the DDR. However, he now wants to focus on writing about the present time. Hein said that his works have always been about the DDR because it was his life. He has always had a critical view of the real socialism and he does not plan to change that. Despite his decision to stop writing about the DDR, Hein’s works continue to be popular and influential in the literary world. His novel “Landnahme” was recently included in the “Spiegel”-literary canon of the 100 best German-language books of the last 100 years.
