EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola has described the success of the Chinese AI firm DeepSeek as a “wake-up call” for Europe. According to Metsola, European AI companies should now use the apparently fallen costs and reduced need for computing power to drive their own innovations.
Speaking on the sidelines of the “World” economic summit, Metsola told a news outlet, “I think this is a wake-up call. If there was ever a moment for European KI firms to unlock more innovations, it’s now. What we see are not only falling prices, but also an understanding that the number of chips needed to advance our KI development is not as large as one might have thought.”
Metsola emphasized the need for a “genuine and serious debate” on investments in artificial intelligence and the potential of AI in the EU. The EU, she said, must also show start-ups and established AI companies that there is a demand for their products, so that they can stay in Europe.
