German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is called upon by the leader of the German Socialist Youth (Juso), Philipp Türmer, to intervene and urge the Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, to change course in the rejection of asylum seekers at the border.
In a statement to the Funke Media Group, Türmer emphasized that the Berlin Administrative Court’s ruling confirms what the Juso has always maintained: the rejection of asylum seekers at the border is illegal. He accused Dobrindt of not being above the law and urged him to respect the court’s decision. It is “absolutely unacceptable” to maintain an illegal instruction to the federal police, effectively encouraging officers to break the law, Türmer said.
If Dobrindt does not come to his senses on his own, the Juso leader suggested, he must be brought to reason by the Chancellor. “Friedrich Merz must take the reins” Türmer stated. “There is no legal basis for rejecting asylum seekers at the border. Instead of standing behind Dobrindt, it is essential to quickly bring the minister back on the right track. The rejections must be stopped.
