In a recent interview with the German newspaper “Tagesspiegel”, Annette Widmann-Mauz, the chair of the Christian Democratic Union’s (CDU) women’s union, emphasized the importance of returning to the center of the democratic spectrum. She urged her party to abandon the alliance with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) and instead focus on finding compromises and effective solutions.
Widmann-Mauz, a former integration minister, had abstained from voting on her party’s proposal on Wednesday, citing the need for democratic parties in the center to take responsibility and find effective solutions. “As long as the democratic parties in the middle are not ready and able to make compromises and find effective solutions, the AfD will be the beneficiary of this situation” she warned.
The CDU chair attributed the AfD’s growing strength to the feeling among many voters that their concerns are no longer being taken seriously by the political establishment.
