A German politician, Julia Klöckner, a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has expressed her reservations about a current motion to ban the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the German Bundestag. In an interview with the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung, Klöckner stated, “I understand the concern and the worry. I, however, consider a ban at the present time, in light of the clear legal uncertainties, to be wrong.”
While she does not rule out the possibility of a ban in the future, should the AfD party continue to radicalize, Klöckner emphasizes the importance of upholding democratic principles. “We must engage in a content-based discussion with the AfD, not simply try to eliminate an unwanted competitor in a democracy”she said.
This week, a cross-party group of lawmakers is set to discuss a motion to ban the AfD in the Bundestag.
