Niedersachsens CDU-Landesvorsitzender Sebastian Lechner has recommended that the newly designated Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) intensively engage with the federal states and their respective CDU state chairpersons upon assuming office. Lechner stated in an interview with “Welt” (Thursday edition) that “every Federal Chancellor, every party leader is interested in maintaining a good exchange with the federal states and their respective state chairpersons.” He added that this is also a prerequisite for the federal government and the federal states to achieve something together in the coming four years. Lechner’s state party, which is the third largest in the country, was left empty-handed in the nomination of CDU ministers in the Merz cabinet.
When asked if he agrees with the personnel selection of the CDU federal chairman, Lechner responded: “Friedrich Merz has decided to put together this team, which he believes is the best setup for a successful federal government. However, it is clear that further strong personalities from the third largest state party, the CDU in Lower Saxony, could also make a contribution to this federal government.”
Lechner admitted that the Union has broken an election campaign promise by agreeing to the federal investment special fund and the necessary constitutional amendment. “I am here for honest words: We promised something different before the election. However, strengthening Germany’s defense capability, especially in these times, is of great importance. That Friedrich Merz prioritized the country and made this decision and implemented it corresponds to what a chancellor must do.
