Germany’s CDU Party Urges Immediate Reduction of Electricity Tax for All Citizens and Businesses
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has called on Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil, a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), to reduce the electricity tax for all citizens and businesses as of the year-end.
According to CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann, the reduction of the electricity tax for all is long overdue, particularly in light of the carbon price. Linnemann stated in an interview with the Bild newspaper that the reduction for citizens and companies by the end of the year is “urgently necessary, especially in view of the acceptance of the energy transition”.
This reaction comes in response to the federal cabinet’s budget resolution, which only plans to reduce the electricity tax for industrial companies as of January 1, 2026. The timeline for the reduction for private households, as agreed upon in the coalition agreement, remains unclear.
