CDU Demands Fresh Start for Judge Selection

A dispute within Germany’s governing coalition concerning the Social Democratic Party’s (SPD) candidate for the Federal Constitutional Court, legal expert Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, has prompted calls for a complete procedural reset.

According to statements to “Bild” Jan Redmann, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Brandenburg, emphasized that unproductive emotion will not resolve the impasse. He suggested restarting the selection process would facilitate a softening of entrenched positions, thereby enabling the necessary majority to be reached.

Redmann, who also leads the CDU parliamentary group in Potsdam, Brosius-Gersdorf’s home city, expressed sharp criticism of the handling of the matter by the parliamentary group of the CDU/CSU alliance. He stated that all involved parties have failed to demonstrate exemplary conduct throughout the selection process, explicitly including his own party.

Despite the current difficulties, Redmann underscored the shared responsibility of all political actors to maintain the operational effectiveness of the Federal Constitutional Court.
