A CDU Official Suggests Future Gas Imports from Russia
Jan Heinisch, the CDU’s state vice chairman in North Rhine-Westphalia, has hinted at the possibility of importing gas from Russia in the future. In an interview with Politico, Heinisch stated, “If a fair and secure peace is found one day, then one should be allowed to discuss the purchase of Russian gas again.”
He emphasized that the goal would be to avoid a situation of dependence similar to the past, not subject to a price dictate, but rather with Russia as one of several possible suppliers worldwide. When asked about the destroyed Nord Stream 2 pipeline, Heinisch said, “The chosen transport route must also be open in the sense of a competition, whether it’s by sea or, naturally, by pipeline.” Russia, he added, would be an additional competitor.
As a negotiator in the coalition talks between the Union and SPD in the working group on climate and energy, Heinisch’s remarks echo those of CDU politician Thomas Bareiß, who made similar statements recently, sparking criticism.
