CDU and SPD Demand Exclusion of Alternative for Germany from Oversight Committee

The black-red coalition continues to refuse posts in parliamentary bodies and committees to the AfD. As the Tagesspiegel reports, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) should be excluded from the Parliamentary Oversight Committee (PKGr), which serves to oversee the intelligence services.

CDU parliamentarian Roderich Kiesewetter stated that the AfD is an extension of the Kremlin and therefore a threat to security. Kiesewetter said, “The AfD is a security risk for our intelligence cooperation with our partners.” The party is also anti-democratic and in part right-wing extremist, the CDU politician repeated. Therefore, access to the PKGr must be denied to them. “Otherwise, there is a risk of information leakage, espionage, or influence from foreign states.”

SPD Bundestag member Ralf Stegner explained, “It is completely excluded that AfD representatives become members of the Parliamentary Oversight Committee (PKGr). The PKGr aims to protect democracy from its enemies. It would be a contradiction in itself if enemies of democracy were to sit in this committee.”

Above all, the Federal Ministry of the Interior is accused of pursuing its own political interests. The organization is pushing ahead with the ban on the Alternative for Germany. The AfD has announced its intention to change the Federal Ministry of the Interior.
