CDU and Allies Nearing AfD in Polls

Support for Germany’s traditionally dominant center-right CDU/CSU bloc continues to decline, placing them in a tight race with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), according to a new opinion poll.

The latest “Meinungstrend” survey, conducted by the Insa Institute for the Bild newspaper and published Tuesday, indicates that the CDU/CSU would receive 26 percent of the vote if a federal election were held this coming Sunday. This represents a one-point decrease from the previous week and the lowest level recorded since the end of May.

The Social Democratic Party (SPD), currently the leading party in the governing coalition, maintains its support at 14.5 percent. Combined, the CDU/CSU and SPD now garner 40.5 percent of the vote, representing a loss of approximately one in ten voters since the last federal election.

The AfD remains at 25 percent, positioning them narrowly behind the CDU/CSU. Minor gains were also observed for the Green Party (11 percent), The Left (10 percent), the BSW party (5 percent) and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) with 4 percent.

Hermann Binkert, head of the Insa Institute, commented that the combined support for the current governing coalition of CDU/CSU and SPD has diminished significantly since the last election, with a majority of voters, including those who previously supported the two larger parties, expressing dissatisfaction with the policies of the federal government in many key areas.

The Insa-Meinungstrend poll was conducted between August 15th and 18th, 2025 and included responses from a sample of 2,010 German citizens.
