Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau steps down under pressure from poor opinion polls.
He will step down as leader of the Liberal Party and as head of government as soon as his party elects a new leader, Trudeau announced in Ottawa on Monday.
“This country deserves a real election” the Prime Minister added. If he were “waging internal battles” he could not be the best option for Canadians at the ballot box. The Parliament has been “paralyzed for months” Trudeau said, so a renewal is needed. House of Commons sessions will be postponed until March 24, he announced.
Trudeau has been prime minister of Canada since 2015. Lately, his popularity and support, even within his own ranks, had declined, so there were calls for his resignation from several MPs.
