US Presidential Candidate Trump Shares Mapped Vision of Canada as US Territory, Igniting Outrage
In a social media post, US presidential candidate Donald Trump shared two maps, one of which shows Canada as a US territory, sparking outrage and denials from Canadian officials.
The maps, shared on Trump’s Truth Social platform, depict the United States and Canada as a single entity, with the US-Canada border erased and the words “United States” superimposed over the new entity. The second map features the same territory, this time in the colors of the US flag, accompanied by the words “Oh Canada”.
In a press conference, Trump suggested the US could use “economic force” to absorb its northern neighbor, threatening to impose harsh tariffs on Canadian goods. “If we eliminate this artificial border and look at what it looks like, it would be a lot better for national security” he argued.
Canada’s outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as well as the leader of the opposition Conservative Party, Pierre Poilievre, swiftly rejected the idea of Canada becoming the 51st US state, with Trudeau stating there is “not the slightest chance” of it happening.
Despite Trump’s proposal, politicians in Ottawa emphasized the importance of maintaining good bilateral relations, particularly as Canada heads into an election season. Trudeau announced earlier this week that he would step down as Premier and Liberal Party leader due to waning popularity.
