G7 Leaders Meet Amid Escalating Tensions with Russia

The leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations gathered in Kananaskis, Canada, on Tuesday evening, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky joining the summit. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed Zelensky, announcing further sanctions against Russia in the process.

Carney emphasized the need to exert maximum pressure on Russia, explaining that the measures would target a range of individuals, institutions and entities in Russia, as well as over 200 ships, dubbed the “shadow fleet” used by Russia to circumvent sanctions.

The Canadian premier also touched on the topic of military aid to Ukraine, including the provision of ammunition. He announced that the next tranche of credit, based on the frozen Russian assets, would be made available. It is clear that this support will continue until a lasting peace is achieved in Ukraine.

In his remarks, Zelensky expressed gratitude for the assistance package and the efforts in the peace negotiations. He reiterated his commitment to a unconditional ceasefire and plans to discuss further sanctions with the Canadian prime minister.
