A leading figure in the German aerospace industry has expressed concerns over the country’s reliance on the US for the procurement of military equipment. Marie-Christine von Hahn, the new CEO of the Federation of the German Aerospace Industry, warns that this approach is “fatal” and neglects the innovative capabilities of the German industry.
In an interview with Business Insider, von Hahn questioned the lack of recognition for industrial value creation in Germany and Europe, stating that she finds it hard to understand. “To believe that it makes sense to order new weapons from outside of Europe, even though the domestic industry is willing and able to deliver, I consider to be fatal” she said.
Von Hahn emphasized the importance of strengthening the German and European industrial base, rather than outsourcing orders to other countries. She highlighted the sector’s global leadership, asserting that “Europe is unchallenged world-class in the defense sector.”
The CEO’s remarks underscore the need for a more self-reliant approach in the procurement of military equipment, one that prioritizes the preservation of German and European industrial capabilities, jobs and economic well-being.
