Can Germany Protect the Rule of Law?

Following the lifting of sanctions against the International Criminal Court by US President Donald Trump, the German Left Party is calling for a protection guarantee for the court. The party’s leader, Jan van Aken, told the Rheinische Post that the self-justification of the US president must not be ignored. He demands that the German Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and the leader of the opposition party issue an immediate, clear and unmistakable protection guarantee for the court, its judges, prosecutors and staff. According to van Aken, the White House’s actions are deliberately undermining all existing norms and rules.

Germany, he said, should now reaffirm its commitment to a comprehensive cooperation with the International Criminal Court. The arrest warrant against the Russian President, Putin, over war crimes in Ukraine, is a prime example, as is the warrant against the Israeli Prime Minister, Netanjahu, over Israel’s military actions in Gaza, van Aken added.
