Can Europe Weather the Tempest?

In an interview with the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland”, former UN diplomat and the outgoing head of the Munich Security Conference, Christoph Heusgen, advises European governments to adopt a more relaxed approach in dealing with US President Donald Trump.

“Given the daily surprises, we should learn to be a bit more patient” Heusgen said, commenting on Trump’s first weeks in office, including his thoughts on the future of the Gaza Strip under US control. “From his first term, we knew about the unpredictability of the American president. He hasn’t changed.”

Heusgen believes that Europeans should stand united and find common answers based on international law. He hopes that the Munich Security Conference, which he will be leading for the last time, will provide a platform for problem-solving for actors from around the world.

“I can’t remember a time when so many crises and conflicts occurred simultaneously” Heusgen said, noting that the conference, themed “Peace through Dialogue”, is expected to attract 60 government leaders and 150 ministers.
