Bayern and Hessen to Review Eligibility of AfD Members for State Employment After Verfassungsschutz Decision
Bayern and Hesse are planning to examine whether members of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party can still serve as state employees, such as police officers, following the decision by the Federal Agency for the Protection of the Constitution to classify the AfD as securely right-extremist.
Hesse’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Roman Poseck (CDU), stated to Bild (Saturday edition), “We will examine to what extent the classification by the Federal Agency for the Protection of the Constitution affects AfD members and officials in the public service. Our employees in police and administration must be able to ensure that they can always stand up for our liberal democratic basic order.”
Poseck aims to establish a uniform stance across the country. “That’s why I will bring up the issue as the subject of the next Internal Minister Conference in June in Bremerhaven” he said.
Bayern’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Joachim Herrmann (CSU), will also review the consequences of the classification for AfD members in state employment. “We must also examine what consequences this classification has for the activities of AfD members in the public service” he stated in the newspaper.
