Can a New Culture of Togetherness Revive the Party's Flagging Fortunes?

In a recent address to the SPD’s federal party convention in Berlin, outgoing party chair Saskia Esken reflected on her time at the helm, acknowledging that not all goals can be achieved in a long tenure.

Despite this, Esken claimed success in elevating the education theme to a prominent position within the party, emphasizing its importance to social democracy. She also believes that she has fostered a culture of togetherness, solidarity and cohesion within the SPD.

For the party’s future, Esken expressed a desire for stronger public approval and increased dialogue with the people, including those with critical or inquiring minds. She emphasized the need for the SPD to refocus on its core issues.

Esken described her time as party chair as a unique and enriching experience, having only grown prouder of her party. However, she noted that the treatment of women within the SPD still requires improvement. Esken believes that a normal, equal treatment of women and men in leadership positions will only be achieved when half of the top positions are held by women.
