Can a Ceasefire and Aid Bring Hope to the Region?

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul Reiterates Call for Ceasefire and Humanitarian Aid in Gaza

In a statement made in Rome on Thursday, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip, describing the situation as “an open wound in the region.” The foreign minister highlighted the unbearable humanitarian situation, where lives are being lost and many, including German citizens, remain in the grip of the Hamas terror group as hostages.

The German government, Wadephul stressed, is actively pursuing a ceasefire, unimpeded access to humanitarian aid in Gaza and the release of the hostages. He has held multiple conversations with his Israeli counterpart in recent weeks to achieve this goal.

Noting that stability in the region can only be achieved through collective efforts, Wadephul emphasized the importance of cooperation with Arab partners. He also stressed the significance of early visits to the region, as neighboring countries such as Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan play a crucial role in the pursuit of a peaceful and secure coexistence in the region.

The Arab reconstruction plan, which Germany is willing to work on jointly, serves as a concrete example of the country’s good and trust-based cooperation with the region, the foreign minister added.
