In the event of a victory for the Union, the Christian Social Union (CSU) has promised continuity in agricultural policy. Günther Felßner, the president of the Bavarian Farmers’ Association and CSU Bundestag candidate, told Politico in an interview before the green week that he has no intention of breaking with the agricultural policy of Cem Özdemir, should he become the agriculture minister. “No, of course not. We will create an agricultural policy that brings ecology and economy under one hat” Felßner said.
Günther Felßner, who has been designated by Markus Söder as the potential agriculture minister, is confident of his chances of success, stating, “I assume that it is a very high probability, given the polls and the political landscape.” On the topic of energy policy, Söder’s man is in line with Özdemir’s green course, saying, “We must generate additional regenerative energy to step out of the fossil bubble, out of the present of fossil fuels.”
However, Felßner does not rule out some changes, saying, “We need sustainable farming systems. And we need not just phasing out and looking back and reducing – we need a greater green harvest, because we have multiple goals. And that’s what we need in sustainable farming systems.” He added, “It’s not just about getting out of production. It’s about jobs, food security, energy security.” Felßner believes that having a specialist on board is a good idea and that the CSU is not considering coalition with the Greens, stating, “We’re not thinking about that.
