Bundestag to Elect Three Constitutional Court Judges

Parliamentary proceedings are underway in the Bundestag concerning the election of three new judges to the Federal Constitutional Court. The Social Democratic Party (SPD) anticipates a successful outcome for the nominations, with officials expressing confidence that the candidates possess the necessary qualifications to garner broad support across democratic factions.

SPD parliamentary secretary Dirk Wiese, in comments to the “Rheinische Post” highlighted ongoing and constructive discussions aimed at ensuring a positive result for the upcoming vote, scheduled for Thursday. He emphasized the significance of this election as a crucial moment for the court.

This vote represents a renewed effort following a previous unsuccessful attempt to fill the judicial vacancies. The proposed slate includes two candidates nominated by the SPD and one by the Union faction.

Securing a majority requires a two-thirds threshold of votes cast, necessitating collaboration between the SPD, the Union and support from the Green Party and the Left Party. This outcome would allow the court to function with stability and avoid reliance on votes from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Concerns have been raised regarding what a parliamentary spokesperson described as attempts by the AfD to undermine the court and its nominees through negative campaigning.
