The Interior Committee of the German Bundestag is set to convene for a special meeting on the coming Monday. A corresponding invitation was sent to committee members on February 4 by the committee’s deputy chair, Lars Castellucci of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), as reported by the “Welt”.
The sole agenda item for the meeting is, thus far, a report on the stabbing incident in Aschaffenburg. It is also possible that the committee will discuss a legislative package on migration control, which the Free Democratic Party (FDP) faction has recently demanded. A corresponding agenda item could be added at short notice, it is said. As of now, no additional agenda items have been announced by any of the factions.
The background of the invitation is that, following the recent committee meeting, questions surrounding the Aschaffenburg attack remained unanswered, said Castellucci to the “Welt”. “There is also a need for further discussion in light of possible shortcomings on the part of the authorities in Bavaria. We have therefore invited the Bavarian Interior Minister, Joachim Herrmann, to report.”
Originally, the meeting was planned for January 31. However, due to the lengthy discussions on the so-called “Zustrombegrenzungsgesetz” (stream of people limitation law) of the Union faction, the meeting did not take place. Both the SPD and the Union factions have expressed skepticism that the Bundestag will pass a legislative package on migration before the election.
