In the 21st round of the Bundesliga, VfL Wolfsburg and Bayer Leverkusen played out a goalless draw.
While the home team had some dangerous chances in the first half, Leverkusen struggled to find the final touch against Wolfsburg’s compact defense. A header by Koulierakis was disallowed for offside in the 7th minute and Leverkusen’s efforts through Xhaka in the 50th and Frimpong in the 83rd minutes ultimately came to nothing. Wolfsburg had a stroke of bad luck when Fischer’s shot in the 75th minute hit the crossbar and the VAR review sparked controversy when a potential penalty for Leverkusen was not awarded after a second look in the 79th minute.
In the end, the point was shared, a result that is a disappointment for Leverkusen in the title race. They remain second in the table, but the eight-point gap to Bayern Munich is now a concern. Wolfsburg, on the other hand, climbs to eighth place with the point.
The other results from the Saturday afternoon matches were: Dortmund – Stuttgart 1:2, Freiburg – Heidenheim 1:0, Mainz – Augsburg 0:0 and Hoffenheim – Union Berlin 0:4. The evening fixtures feature Borussia Mönchengladbach and Eintracht Frankfurt.
