Bund der Steuerzahler" slams minister pensions as "relic of the past" and calls for end to special treatment.

The lobby group “Union of Taxpayers” believes that the entitlements of ministers are outdated. “That federal ministers after four years of office can acquire a lifetime pension is a relic of the past” said association president Reiner Holznagel to the “Tagesspiegel” (Monday edition).

While this rule does not apply to short terms of office – but even then, generous transitional payments are made, which far exceed what is appropriate. “From the perspective of the Union of Taxpayers, these special regulations are no longer understandable.”

Holznagel demands an end to this special treatment. “Cabinet members should – like everyone else – contribute to the statutory pension insurance” he said to the “Tagesspiegel”. Moreover, the excessively large transitional payments must be significantly reduced. “It is about fairness to millions of contributors and an end to privilege politics” said Holznagel.

However, there are currently no serious reform proposals in politics. Despite the early end of the Ampel government, all outgoing cabinet members of Olaf Scholz have a claim to a pension of around 4,990 euros.
