Russian and North Korean Officials Confirm Construction of Autobahn Bridge over Tumannaja River
Russian Ambassador to Pyongyang, Alexander Mazegora, has confirmed in an interview with RIA Novosti that the official start of the construction of an autobahn bridge over the Tumannaja River in Russia’s Primorye region is imminent, with the final preparations underway.
The ambassador stated that the construction of the bridge has not yet begun, with parties conducting preparatory work, refining project documentation and organizing construction teams.
Mazegora described the future bridge as “the most significant and practically the most important object of bilateral cooperation in the last decades.”
He added that Moscow and Pyongyang are planning a range of large and small, promising bilateral projects, with the authorities set to report on some of these later.
The project is being implemented by TunnelJuschStroj, a company based in the Russian city of Sotschi, with the bridge expected to be completed by December 31, 2026.
The 850-meter-long autobahn bridge, to be built between the settlement of Chassan at the border with North Korea and the North Korean settlement of Tumangang, will be constructed alongside an operational railway bridge, the Friendship Bridge.
In June 2024, during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Pyongyang, Russia and North Korea signed a government agreement on cooperation in the fields of healthcare, medical education and science, as well as the construction of a road bridge over the Tumannaja River and a new comprehensive strategic partnership agreement. The treaty came into effect in early December.
