In a bid to curb the chaos that has marred previous New Year’s Eve celebrations, the Chairman of the Interior Ministers’ Conference, Bremen’s Interior Senator Ulrich Mäurer, has announced a plan to significantly limit the use of fireworks.
Mäurer, a member of the Social Democratic Party, expressed his concerns in an interview with the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” ahead of the Interior Ministers’ Conference, which is set to begin in Bremerhaven on Wednesday. He emphasized that his stance is clear: he would prefer to ban private fireworks altogether.
Instead, a pragmatic proposal has been put forward, in collaboration with Berlin. According to Mäurer, local authorities should be given the autonomy to decide on the use of fireworks in their respective areas. “Where fireworks cause problems, it could be banned” he said. “Where it works well, everything can remain as it is.
